FAQs
Is PowerOn Puerto Rico changing?
PowerOn Puerto Rico is an Emergency Demand Response Program launched in late 2023 which is designed to help improve grid stability for all Puerto Ricans, and deliver additional value to solar and battery customers on the island. In response to the anticipated energy emergency during the summer of 2025, we’re working with the Government of Puerto Rico to expand the program with additional participants and more anticipated grid events. LUMA anticipates roughly 75 grid events from July through October of 2025, though this may vary depending on energy supply and demand.
If you were previously enrolled, note that the new maximum backup reserve during grid events is 80%. While you can lower it to whatever you’d like to earn more money from the program, we do recommend an 80% backup reserve to help you power through the anticipated outages this summer and fall. For newly auto-enrolled participants, 80% will be the default grid event backup reserve. The backup reserve can be lowered any time in your Tesla app or by emailing grid@sunrun.com, depending on which type of battery you have. If the 80% maximum does not suit your needs, you can unenroll from the program by emailing grid@sunrun.com
How long does PowerOn Puerto Rico last?
Initially launched in November 2023, this program has approval from the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to continue operation and Sunrun may continue to operate the program in future years.
If you manually opted in, your system will by default participate as long as the program is running. Auto-enrolled systems will participate from July 1, 2025 to October 31, 2025 and may have the opportunity to stay enrolled or opt in for participating beyond this time. See program terms and conditions here (if you opted in) or here (if you auto-enrolled) for more details. If you’d like to unenroll, email us at grid@sunrun.com.
How do I adjust my Virtual Power Plant backup reserve?
If you have a Tesla Powerwall system, you can adjust your Virtual Power Plant backup reserve through the Virtual Power Plant settings of your Tesla app. Note that this is not the same as your general Powerwall backup reserve, which we recommend to be at 100%.
If you have a SolarEdge system, email us at grid@sunrun.com with your desired backup reserve for PowerOn Puerto Rico grid events and we’ll change it for you.
Can I choose which grid events to participate in?
Yes! In your Tesla app (for Powerwall systems) or Sunrun app (for SolarEdge systems), you will be able to opt-out of individual grid events. If you choose not to participate in an event, you will not be compensated for that event. If you do not want to participate in any events, you can opt out of the program entirely by contacting us at grid@sunrun.com.
What happens if an outage occurs?
In the event of a grid outage, your battery system’s stored energy will be fully available to power your home. In other words, your battery system will not export any energy to the grid when the power is down, and will only send energy to your home. Storm Mode (an automatic Sunrun setting for LG and SolarEdge backup batteries) or Storm Watch (if enabled in the Tesla app for Powerwall) will keep you prepared for storms.
PowerOn Puerto Rico is designed to mitigate the rolling outages by reducing the size, frequency, and duration. However, we will not be able to prevent all outages. In fact, we expect that outages may occur directly after grid events. For this reason, we are recommending that you begin with an 80% Virtual Power Plant backup reserve. See our "How should I balance backup with maximizing rewards?” FAQ for more information.
How should I balance backup reserve with maximizing rewards?
We recommend you start at an 80% Virtual Power Plant backup reserve. If you want to contribute more energy to the grid and earn more in rewards, you can lower your backup reserve below 80%. For example, if you will be away from your home for an extended period, and your backup needs are not as significant, you may choose to lower your backup reserve, contribute more energy to the grid, and maximize your rewards. You can easily return your settings to 80% when you return by customizing in the “Virtual Power Plant settings” section of your Tesla app or emailing us at grid@sunrun.com.
How much money can I expect to earn from this program?
You'll receive a reward payment of $1.00 per kWh sent to your home or to the grid for this program. That adds up fast!
For example, for a system with one battery, for the period of July 1 through October 31st of this year, with an estimated 75 events and an 80% Virtual Power Plant backup reserve, we expect earnings to be around ~$140-200 depending on your battery type. For a system with two batteries and an 80% reserve, or a one-battery system with a 40% reserve, estimated earnings across 75 events increases to around ~$280-600.
How and when will I receive my rewards?
Sunrun will validate your system’s performance and will distribute payments to you twice per year. Rewards will be sent to your email address. Keep an eye out for an email from noreply@sunrun.com.
If you were auto-enrolled in the program, you can view your reward payout schedule in your Terms & Conditions here.
If you opted in to the program, you can view your payout schedule in your Terms & Conditions here.
Note: We reserve the right to report payments as income where required. LUMA/PREPA is not responsible for any compensation, refunds, or other payments relating to PowerOn Puerto Rico.
What will my battery be doing during the program?
When all available energy generation resources are in use and the utility is not expected to meet forecasted energy demand, your battery system will send some stored energy to your home and to the grid, earning you cash rewards.
After one of these “grid events,” your battery system will recharge from available solar and will return to normal behavior until the next event.
How do I unenroll?
At any time during the program if you wish to stop participating you can unenroll by emailing grid@sunrun.com. If you unenroll from the program, your system’s performance during any previous grid events will be validated and you will receive a final gift card for your earned rewards when Sunrun next sends out reward payments. Once your unenrollment is confirmed, you won’t earn additional rewards and you will be unable to re-enroll until the program is renewed.
