Sunrun Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
A more sustainable, reliable grid
As the industry's Virtual Power Plant leader, Sunrun is creating a better future for the American grid.
Virtual Power Plants
- Peak demand is met sustainably

- Peak demand is met locally
- Peak demand times reward participating Sunrun customers
The Old Way
- Peak demand is met unsustainably
- Peak demand is met by centralized peaker plants
- Peak demand is met non-locally
- No rewards for people reducing grid strain during peak demand times
Having a battery just got even more rewarding
If a VPP is available in your area, it's a great chance to support the grid and earn rewards.
Use & export stored power
By seamlessly using and exporting stored energy when grid demand is highest.
Get rewarded
You'll earn rewards for relieving strain on the grid by automatically reducing energy demand and increasing supply.
Stay ready for anything
When occasionally exporting, you’ll keep an automatic backup reserve in case of an outage.

FAQs
Where are Sunrun VPPs available?
Sunrun VPPs are currently available in most of California, as well as certain parts of Texas and of the Northeast, and Puerto Rico. For additional details, reach out to us at grid@sunrun.com.
How do I know if I am eligible?
We reach out to customers who are eligible with opportunities to sign up or a notification of auto-enrollment. If you are a Sunrun solar and battery customer, believe you are in an eligible area, and would like to join a VPP, feel free to reach out to us at grid@sunrun.com.
What happens if there's an outage or upcoming storm?
Your battery system will not send any energy to the grid during an outage. Storm Mode (an automatic Sunrun setting for LG and SolarEdge backup batteries) or Storm Watch (if enabled in the Tesla app for Powerwall) will keep you prepared for storms.
Are solar-only customers eligible?
Unfortunately, no. Only Sunrun customers with batteries can join Virtual Power Plants. If you're interested in adding a battery, give us a call at 385-275-9359 to see if we offer add-on installation in your area.
