Why East Peoria homeowners are adding batteries
Ameren Illinois delivers power to East Peoria homes, whether you buy your electricity supply from Ameren or from another supplier. Here’s what shapes a solar and battery plan here.
Credits for extra solar changed in 2025
If you applied for net metering on or after January 1, 2025, the power you send to the grid earns credit only for the supply part of your Ameren bill, not delivery charges. Those credits carry over until you use them². Homes that went solar before then generally keep their original net metering for the life of the system. A battery lets you use more of your own solar in the evening instead of exporting it.
Supply prices jumped
Ameren Illinois’ summer supply price rose from about 8.1 cents per kWh in 2024 to about 12.2 cents in 2025, after a spike in the regional market for power plant capacity³. Solar you make and use at home isn’t exposed to those swings.
Storms take rooftop solar offline too
In June 2026, storms and 12 confirmed tornadoes crossed central Illinois⁴, and Ameren’s remaining outages afterward were mostly in the Bloomington, Peoria, Champaign and Danville areas⁵. Rooftop solar shuts off in an outage unless there’s a battery behind it.
Built for central Illinois winters
Solar panels work more efficiently in cold weather, and most snow melts or blows off them quickly⁶. They make less power on short winter days and more in summer, so a design is based on a full year of sun and use.

East Peoria solar and battery FAQs
It depends on your roof, how much power your home uses and how much of it you want backed up. With a Sunrun Subscription, you can get solar and a battery for $0 to little down and a predictable monthly payment while Sunrun owns, monitors and maintains the system. You can also buy the system with cash or a loan. If you buy, note that the federal tax credit for homeowner-owned solar isn’t available for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Your advisor will price both options for free, using your Ameren bills.
If you applied on or after January 1, 2025, extra solar you send to the grid is credited against the supply part of your Ameren bill, and the credits carry over until you use them. Delivery charges aren’t offset. If you applied earlier, you generally keep your original net metering for the life of your system. Because exported power is worth less than it used to be, a battery that stores midday solar for the evening helps you use more of it yourself.
Illinois Shines is the state’s solar incentive program. It pays for the renewable energy credits (often called SRECs) a system is expected to make over 15 years, through approved vendors such as Sunrun. For small systems approved since June 1, 2026, half is paid when the system turns on and the rest over the next six years. With a Sunrun Subscription, Sunrun owns the system and passes the value of state incentives along in your monthly rate. If you buy, your advisor will show how the payment applies to your price. As of October 5, 2026, the program still had room for new home systems. Learn about Illinois Shines.
Yes. Panels actually run more efficiently in the cold, and most snow melts or blows off them quickly. They make less power on short winter days and more in summer, which is why your design is based on a full year of sun and use. A battery adds backup for winter storms that take the grid down.
When the grid goes down, your battery switches on by itself and powers the circuits you chose to back up. How long it lasts depends on how charged it is and what you run: a refrigerator, lights and Wi-Fi use far less than an electric water heater or an EV charger. With Storm Watch turned on, your battery works to get as close to a full charge as it can before a severe storm arrives, and your panels recharge it when the sun comes out. Our battery duration guide shows how to stretch it.
Yes. Through 2029, Ameren Illinois offers a one-time rebate of $300 per kilowatt of solar capacity for new systems with a smart inverter, and a battery rebate of $300 per kilowatt-hour of storage. Since June 1, 2026, batteries that take the storage rebate must join a utility-run program for five years that can call on them from 4 to 6 p.m. on summer weekdays. Who receives a rebate depends on who owns the system, so your advisor will walk you through what applies to your home.
